Common Questions about photo borders

Overview
Photo borders allow you to add decorative designs around the edges of your online photos. Borders are a great addition to photos you plan to print, or to just add a nice touch when sharing your online photos with friends. Add a basic black or white border for everyday photos or add a seasonal border for a special occasion or holiday.

You can add a border to a single photo, add the same border to every photo in an album, or add different borders to each photo in an album. Whenever you add a border to a photo, you're working on a copy. The original, unbordered photo remains will remain in your album until you choose to delete it. You can border landscape and portrait photos - our designs will adapt to either photo style.

We offer a variety of borders for your photos:

Studio    Includes basic black and white borders as well as special effects like torn edges, soft fade and shapes.
Fun    Casual decorative designs for any occasion.
Events    Designs for birthdays, birth announcements, thank you's and more.
More    Holiday, seasonal and sport borders

Check back often because we add more border designs all the time!

Borders are free. There is no charge for using borders and there is no extra charge when ordering prints of your bordered photos. And like our everyday storage, there is no limit to the number of bordered photos you can store in your Truprint account.

How to add borders to your photos
Step 1: Choose your photo(s)
Select the album that contains the photos you want to border, and click the 'get prints' button, then the 'bordered prints' button on the right hand toolbar. Then choose one or more photos from that album. After selecting your album or photos, be sure to click the yellow 'choose' button to continue. You can border one photo or several photos at a time.

Step 2: Choose your borders
We offer dozens of decorative borders in a variety of categories:

Studio    Includes basic black and white borders as well as special effects like torn edges, soft fade and shapes.
Fun    Casual decorative designs for any occasion.
Events    Designs for birthdays, birth announcements, thank you's and more.
More    Holiday, seasonal and sport borders

While viewing your photo, click on a category tab on the right side of the page. Then click on a border design to preview it on your photo. Keep clicking on the border designs until you find one that you like. To remove a border from your photo, click the 'remove border' link near the bottom of the page.

Once you've finalized the border for your photo, you can finish or continue adding borders to the other photos in your album. To finish and border just the one photo, click the 'done adding borders' button.

To add borders to more photos, click the 'next' and 'previous' buttons above the photo to browse through your album. While viewing each photo, repeat the steps of choosing a category, and then selecting a border design. To use the same border on every photo in your album, click the 'add border to all photos' checkbox near the bottom of the page.

After you've finished adding borders to your photos, click the 'done adding borders' button at the top or bottom of the page. This will save the border changes you made to each photo. Remember, whenever you add a border to a photo, you're working on a copy. The original, unbordered photos remain in your album until you choose to delete them.

To exit the add border process without making any changes to your photos, click the 'cancel' button at anytime.

How to add borders to prints in your cart

You can add a border - white thin, white torn, or black thin - to any unbordered prints in your cart. Only one border style can be applied in the cart. To add different borders or multiple border styles to your prints, return to your photo library and add borders from there.

NOTE: Any border added at this point will be applied to ALL prints in your cart that don't already have a border. The new border will only be applied to the prints in your cart, not the original prints in your album(s).

To add a border from your cart, follow these steps:

  1. In the green 'select your finish and border' box, click the circle beneath the border you'd like to add to your prints. To see larger examples of the borders, click the 'view examples' link.
  2. Once you've picked your border, your border will be automatically applied to all of the prints in your cart that didn't already have a border.
  3. Click the 'print preview' link under a photo in your shopping cart to preview your photo with the new border.
  4. If you're happy with your new border, you can keep shopping or check out. If you want to remove the new border from your prints, click the circle beneath 'no border'.

To get started, click the "order prints" , "share photos" or "get hi-res photos" button on the right hand toolbar when viewing your photos.

Common questions about photo borders
Is there a cost for adding borders to my photos?
Borders are absolutely free. There is no charge for using borders and there is no extra charge when ordering prints of your bordered photos. And like our everyday storage, there is no limit to the number of bordered photos you can store in your Truprint account.

Can I change or remove a border from a photo?
When you border a photo, we always keep a copy of the original unbordered photo in your account. So to work with an unbordered photo, you can use the original. If you have already deleted the unbordered original, you can still remove or change your border.

To get started, view the photo in your album and then click the 'get prints' button and then the 'bordered prints' button on the right hand toolbar. Your photo will appear with its border. Click the 'remove border' link and if needed, choose another border or leave it as is to unborder your photos. When finished, click the 'done adding border' button. When you return to your album, you'll have the first bordered photo as well another copy of the photo, without a border or with your new border.

When I share bordered photos, do my friends see the borders? Can they order prints of my bordered photos?
Yes, your bordered photos will appear the same to your friends. And if they'd like, they can also order prints of your bordered photos. Please note that your friends cannot change your borders or any aspect of your shared album(s). As the owner, you are the only one permitted to make changes to your albums.

How do I add the same border to every photo in an album?
When adding a border to a photo, click the 'add border to all photos' checkbox near the bottom of the page. This will apply the same border design to every photo in your album. Be sure to click the 'done adding borders' button to confirm your changes.

Can I use a different border on each photo in an album?
Yes, you can add a different border to each photo in your album. To get started, click the 'get prints' button and then the 'bordered prints' button on the right hand toolbar. To add borders to each photo in the album, click the 'next' and 'previous' buttons above the photo to browse through your album. While viewing each photo, repeat the steps of choosing a category, and then selecting a border design. When you're done adding borders, click the 'done adding borders' button to confirm your changes.

Will my photo be cropped when I add a border? Will it be cropped when I order prints?
Our borders are designed in a 2:3 aspect ratio, which are best suited to a 4x6" (100 x 150 mm) size photo. Many digital camera photos are in a 3:4 aspect ratio, so it is likely that a portion of the top and bottom of your photo will be trimmed to accommodate the border.

When you order a print of a bordered photo, we will adjust the proportions of the border for the print size you choose. We do this so that the border will not be cropped irregularly during the printing process. However, we recommend using the 'print preview' feature in the shopping cart to see how your photo within the border itself may be cropped. To use print preview, click the 'print preview' link beneath the photo in your shopping cart to see how your photo will print at different sizes (4x6 (100 x 150 mm), 5x7 (125 x 175 mm), 8x10 (203 x 254 mm)).
